When to start working with a baby

Tip:   Working with crias and weanlings… Less is really more and procrastination could be a good thing!

If you can show your babies from the time they hit the ground that you are safe to be around you really don’t have much else to do.  What is it that you want to teach young alpacas and llamas? More than anything else… to stand quietly next to you without having to hold them still.  Consistently using a catch pen for any handling, keeping your hands to yourself when you are not otherwise working in a catch pen and setting up a herding system that puts you completely in the driver’s seat so that there is NEVER any chasing or grabbing– are all the keys to showing your animals that you are a safe human.  Having done all of these things what else is there? Not a whole lot really…
