Can any one join the guild?

The Guild and was formed to meet the growing need for education and resources for the camelid owner and/or handler.  Camelidynamics is a philosophy, which incorporates specific techniques, methodologies and specialized equipment that appreciates the nature of the camelid, while saving you time and getting the job done!  Camelidynamics has evolved with over 25 years of experience, and continues to innovate.  The Guild is one of the ways that these innovations and the collective experience of all the members can be shared, and all benefit.  The Guild is for anyone interested in camelids and their welfare.

There are three categories of membership within the Camelidynamics Guild, so there is something for everyone!  They are:  (1) Associate Member; (2) Handler; and (3) Teachers of Camelidynamics (Practitioners and Instructors).

The categories of membership and their associated benefits, educational requirements, and annual dues are outlined in the Guild Guidelines.

Who designed the Zephyr halter and what is Marty’s connection to Zephyr Farm?

The Zephyr Halter is the official halter for Camelidynamics. Zephyr Farm is the business co-founded and currently owned and operated by Marty McGee Bennett and Perry McGee. The Zephyr halter was designed by Marty McGee Bennett and is continually evaluated to make sure that it continues to be the best halter available for alpaca and llama owners and enthusiasts. The halters are each hand made by a team of Mennonite harness makers.

What is an advanced training?

Advanced trainings are four days of intensive work with animals and people. The only pre-requisite is one 2-day basic clinic. We have a great time! It is hard work and intense but very satisfying. Advanced trainings are groups of between 18-25 students. Your cohorts will be a mix of brand new students that have never been to an advanced training before as well as students and graduates of the program at various levels. Practitioners teach many of the skills and therefore you will work with a variety of teachers including with me. You will be video taped working with an animal and will have an opportunity to go over that videotape with me. Each advanced training is different we do not cover all skills and techniques at every training. In general there is more attention to detail however each student learns what they are ready to learn at that particular training.

What is the Camelidynamics teaching program?

Certification as a Camelidynamics Teacher takes considerable commitment.  The levels of certification within the teaching program are:

Apprentice Practitioner

Practitioner

Instructor

The philosophy is easy to learn and the techniques look easy, but extensive training and practice are required to become proficient.  Many people attend one clinic and feel they could teach the method.  After attending two or three more trainings, most people begin to realize how much there is to learn.  It is at this time-when students realize what they do not know-that they begin to have an understanding of the work.  The requirements for teaching Camelidynamics are deliberately rigorous and comprehensive.  Qualified teachers benefit the students and the animals, as well as the reputation of the program and the work.

The first phase of the practitioner program is an apprenticeship.  During the period of apprenticeship, individuals are asked to pursue a rigorous amount of education and practice before providing several (evaluated) lessons to students at no charge.  This is the period of time when the apprentice is learning the combination of working with animals and teaching people.

Standards are high for Camelidynamics Practitioners and Instructors, yet the benefits are wide-ranging.  The camelid business is growing and the demand for training is increasing.  Additionally, with many camelid owners working a job “off” the farm, the need to be able to complete even basic animal husbandry tasks efficiently and enjoyably, are even greater.  The income potential for Practitioners is good, yet will require an individual business plan, and as much (or more) skill in business and marketing, as in animal handling and Camelidynamics.

What is the first step to get started in the Teaching program?

The first step is to attend a Two-day basics clinic with either Marty or a Camelidynamics Instructor. Attending a two-day clinic satisfies the pre-requisite to attend the advanced trainings. To read more about the teaching program read through the the Guild Guidelines and Appendix.

How long does it take to become a Instructor?

This is a hard question to answer for several reasons.  Each student begins the program with a different level of skill, natural talent and previous experience.   Some students have more time to practice and more animals to practice with between clinics. Much of the learning progression happens between the clinics rather than at the clinics and largely determines a student's improvement and mastery of the skills.  The entire program is described in the Guild Guidelines and Appendix and can be found in the Guild section of the website.

What is a Camelidynamics Handler?

The Camelidynamics Handler Seal or the CHS is a useful designation particularly for marketing. The seal is very useful for shearers, veterinarians, transporters and ranch sitters as well as breeders. The Handler Seal designation indicates a defined level of handling skill. Individuals who have attended a basic two-day training AND an advanced training are eligible for the Camelidynamics Handler Seal. The seal requires dues of $96 per year, Handlers can use the seal and other marketing materials on their business card and website. Handlers also have access to a special private forum on the Guild Forum where they can share marketing ideas and other ideas
