I do a lot of work with rescued llamas. Normally I can get them to a point of using the catch rope within a month or two.

I rescued 7 severely abused intact males at the beginning of November. It has taken three months to get to the point that I can enter the pen without them acting like they were being attacked by a mountain lion. Move on to escape route and the catch rope.

    12x12 pen, four llamas

Do the escape route movement until they settle down and only move if I do. Use the wand and catch rope, not much issue getting it around their neck and back to my hand. But then they act like they have been lassoed and fight against the rope (I can’t move fast enough to keep the pressure off the rope) all I can do is let go of one end and allow them to escape.

Am I teaching bad habits by letting them go?
Should I hold on to the rope?

Only two of them don’t panic/fight the rope
